A building can survive after the institution that created it has disappeared.
Santo Estevo passed from monastic rule to confiscation, abandonment, protection, consolidation and a new hospitality use. The stone remained. The system around it had to be built again.
Tradition reaches further back, but the verified public timeline begins in 921—the point at which the monastery enters the surviving documentary record.

What burned cannot be replaced by generated certainty.
Fires and political disruption left an uneven archive. Documentary silence is not proof that nothing happened—but missing evidence is not permission to invent.
Part of the monastic archive and built fabric was lost.

THE INSTITUTION ENDS
The monks left.
The architecture did not.
Confiscation nationalised property and expelled the community. The operating system that had sustained the complex disappeared.

Protection recognised the place. It did not yet give it a future.
Later work stabilised the fabric and tested possible public uses. An administrative archive was considered. Hotel use came only after a longer search for a viable programme.

Hospitality did not restore monastic life. It restored occupation.
Contemporary rooms, meals, meetings and rest entered inherited masonry. The transformation is valuable because the difference between old structure and new programme remains legible.
